Konrad-Zuse-Medal for Johannes Buchmann
Deputy CRISP-Speaker receives award for recognition of his achievements in Computer Science
Yesterdas evening Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Johannes Buchmann was awarded the Konrad-Zuse-Medal for achievements in computer science on behalf of the German Informatics Society (Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V.). Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Liggesmeyer, President of the German Informatics Society: „Mit Johannes Buchmann ehrt die Gesellschaft für Informatik einen herausragenden Wissenschaftler, der die Entwicklung der Cybersicherheitsforschung in Deutschland und weltweit maßgeblich geprägt hat.“
Johannes Buchmann studied mathematics, physics, pedagogy and philosophy. After being a mathematics teacher he did a doctorate in “Zahlengeometrische Kettenbruchalgorithmen zur Einheitenberechnung”, did his traineeship and afterwards went to the USA with a research fellowship. There he developed the algorithmic algebraic number theory for cryptographic application. After that he resumed his research in Cryptanalysis of Public-Key-Methods and Post-Quantum-Cryptography in Germany, initially in Düsseldorf and Saarbrücken and since 1996 as a professor of computer science at Technische Universität Darmstadt.
In Darmstadt Buchmann was significantly involved in developing the “Center for Research in Security and Privacy” (CRISP), which by now is one of the flagships for IT-Security Research. Beyond that he built a bridge between basic research and practical application with the development of new cryptographic methods.
Apart from technical topics Johannes Buchmann is concerned with the social-economical implications of computer science. Within the interdisciplinary project of the National Academy of Science and Engineering acatec “Internet Privacy” for which he is responsible, relevant studies and recommendations for society were developed.
Johannes Buchmann looks back on an impressive scientific success as a professor of youth promotion, which emanated 67 successfully completed theses. Beyond that Johannes Buchmann is active in numerous scientific committees and committees of science policy, where he represents the point of view of computer science.
Darmstadt- a renowned location of international Cybersecurity research
For more than 15 years - also thanks to the commitment of Johannes Buchmann - there is a strong and internationally renowned Cybersecurity research at the TU Darmstadt. During his time at the TU Darmstadt great research centers and projects have been acquired: starting with the Darmstädter Center for IT-Security over 15 years ago, and 2008 with the CASED-Center funded by the State Hessen to a cryptography- collaborative research center and a graduate college of DFG, a Intel-Research Institute and finally the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity, CRISP. Today Cybersecurity is one of six research areas of the TU Darmstadt, within which over 30 subject areas of 8 departments are working together interdisciplinarily.
