ATHENE and GSI establish real-world laboratory for AI security research in the Green IT Cube

ATHENE and the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung have launched a major research partnership to install a high-performance AI computer in the renowned "Green IT Cube". The collaboration will implement a powerful twelve-node AI cluster with eight high-end GPUs each in one of the world's most sustainable scientific data centers, creating a dedicated real-world laboratory that will enable the secure analysis of sensitive data and the simulation of AI attacks without third-party access. The partnership is strategically embedded in the Helmholtz Association's HPC Gateway initiative, which aims to make high performance computing infrastructures available for collaborative projects with industry and to intensify knowledge transfer between research and industry. Prof. Michael Waidner, Director of ATHENE, describes the collaboration as "an important step towards strengthening digital information security", while Dr. Katharina Stummeyer, Administrative Director of GSI and FAIR, emphasises the unique infrastructure of the Green IT Cube, which is now being made available to a "strong partner in the field of IT security and AI research" in the form of Fraunhofer SIT.
