Tracking down lost keys or stolen bicycles made easy
While it was previously possible to track down Apple devices that were thought to have disappeared thanks to the "Find My" tracking app, it is now possible to better locate all kinds of Bluetooth devices - or important objects equipped with them, such as keys, bicycles or suitcases. A research team led by ATHENE researcher and emergenCITY coordinator Prof. Matthias Hollick at TU Darmstadt has developed and published an open-source framework for locating personal Bluetooth devices based on Apple's "Find My Network".

Paper accepted at SIGCOMM 2021
ATHENE researchers from Fraunhofer SIT and TU Darmstadt place a paper at the A* ranked ACM SIGCOMM. The flagship conference of the ACM Special Interest Group on Data Communication (SIGCOMM) focuses on applications, technologies, architectures and protocols for computer communication.

Successful submissions on ARES 2021
Researchers from the research institutions involved in ATHENE, Fraunhofer SIT, TU Darmstadt and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, were able to place several papers at the "International Conference on Availability, Reliability and Security", ARES for short. The conference highlights various aspects of security, with a special focus on the crucial link between availability, reliability and security.

Fraunhofer study on the IT security of political parties
At the end of 2020, ATHENE launched a study on its own initiative to support the parties currently represented in the Bundestag in assessing and improving their security against cyber attacks. The project is being carried out for ATHENE by staff of the participating Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT and led by Dr. Haya Shulman, head of the department Cybersecurity Analytics and Defences at Fraunhofer SIT.

Successful submissions at USENIX 2021
In the meantime, all papers accepted at the 30th USENIX Security Symposium, or USENIX, have been determined. In total, six papers developed within the framework of ATHENE research were accepted at the A*-ranked conference. ATHENE researchers from TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer SIT are involved in the papers.

Premiere for Fraunhofer CyberStar Award
The Fraunhofer CyberStar Award (FCSA) was presented for the first time this year, honoring outstanding academic theses in applied cybersecurity from Israel. Prize winners are Dr. Eyal Ronen from Tel Aviv University and Anatoly Shusterman from Ben Gurion University. The award ceremony took place as part of the virtually German-Israeli Cyber Conference, in the presence of Yigal Unna, Director General of the Israeli National Cyber Directorate, Arne Schönbohm, President of the Federal Office for Information Security BSI, and numerous other experts.

Three papers authored by ATHENE researcher Prof. Christian Reuter, head of the PEASEC research group at the TU Darmstadt, and his team were accepted at the 24th ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW). At the Core A ranked conference, researchers and practitioners exchange ideas on the technical, social, material, and theoretical challenges of designing technologies to support collaborative work and life activities.

ATHENE scientists find security vulnerabilities in Tapplock Bluetooth locks
Researchers at Fraunhofer SIT were able to pick Bluetooth locks from the US manufacturer Tapplock in seconds using simple means. All they needed was a homemade directional radio antenna made from crisp cans and two commercially available mini-computers. The manufacturer was informed about the vulnerabilities and has since fixed them in one of its models.

Claudio Ciborra Award goes to ATHENE researcher
The paper "Algoactivist Practices in Ridesharing - A Topic Modeling & Grounded Theory Approach", written by ATHENE researcher Prof. Alexander Benlian together with Dr. Martin Adam (both TU Darmstadt) and Jennifer Jiang (Goethe University Frankfurt), was awarded the Claudio Ciborra Award (Runners up) at the European Conference on Information Systems, ECIS 2021. It is thus considered one of the most innovative studies presented at the conference.
